Viticulture, Diversification & Agricultural Redevelopment

Pridham Viticulture works across vineyard management, structural netting, irrigation, diversification projects and agricultural redevelopment throughout McLaren Vale and the surrounding reasons. We help growers and landholders improve productivity, manage risk and explore long-term agricultural opportunities.

Below are answers to some of the most commonly asked questions we receive from growers, landholders and agricultural businesses.

If you would like more detailed advice specific to your property or operation, please contact our team.

Viticulture & Vineyard Management

What is happening in the Australian wine grape industry?

The wine industry is going through structural change. Rising production costs, softer demand in some categories and increased market pressure are causing many growers to reassess lower-performing vineyard blocks; at the same time, premium wine regions such as McLaren Vale continue to hold strong long-term value.

Contact us to discuss vineyard redevelopment or diversification options.

Why are some growers reconsidering parts of their vineyard?

Not all vineyard blocks remain commercially viable over time. Factors such as water efficiency, vine health, yield performance and operating costs can influence long-term returns.

Some growers are improving existing vineyards, while others are exploring redevelopment or diversification opportunities alongside viticulture.

We can assist with redevelopment planning and site assessment.

Does diversification mean leaving the wine industry?

No. In many cases, diversification is about strengthening whole-property resilience while retaining high-performing vineyard assets. Many growers are now looking at mixed agricultural systems rather than relying on a single crop.

Contact us to discuss diversification opportunities for your property.

What makes a vineyard block a candidate for redevelopment?

Common indicators include:

  • declining profitability
  • poor vine performance
  • high water use
  • difficult access
  • ongoing operational inefficiencies
  • changing market demand

We can assist with practical redevelopment and transition planning.

Diversification & SHD Olives

What are Super High Density (SHD) olives?

SHD olives are hedgerow-style olive groves designed for full mechanical harvesting using over-the-row harvesters.  SHD is being increasingly explored in Mediterranean climates due to lower labour requirements and scalable production systems.

Contact our team to discuss SHD olive establishment and site suitability.

Are SHD olives suitable for McLaren Vale?

Many parts of McLaren Vale and the Fleurieu Peninsula are well suited to SHD olive production depending on soil, water availability, and site conditions.

Contact us for a property-specific assessment.

Are olives replacing vineyards in McLaren Vale?

No. Wine remains central to the regions identity and economy; however, some growers are introducing olives and other agricultural enterprises to improve long-term business resilience and diversity income streams.

Talk to our team about long-term establishment planning.

What are realistic alternatives to wine grapes?

Potential alternatives may include SHD olives, enclosed horticulture, berries, specialised fruit crops and mixed agricultural systems.

Industry production information and olive sector resources are also available through the Australian Olive Association.

Structural Netting

Why are more growers installing permanent netting?

More growers now use permanent netting to reduce crop losses from birds, hail, wind and pest pressure while improving crop consistency.

Speak with our team about structural netting options.

How long does structural orchard netting last?

Commercial-grade systems are commonly designed for long-term use, with many installations lasting upward of 12 years when properly maintained.

Contact us for netting inspections, repairs or upgrades.

Can existing netting structures be upgraded or repaired?

In many cases, our team can repair, reinforce or upgrade existing infrastructure rather than replace the full system.

We can assess existing structures and provide upgrade recommendations.

Research into crop protection and orchard resilience continues across the horticultural sector through organisations such as Hort Innovation.
